With the sale of Magnus Walkers 1972 "STR" at Pebble Beach for $302k, the question becomes how much is too much for a resto-mod car? While I agree with almost everyone that the STR is an amazing looking car is it really worth the price tag? At $302k your nearing a Singer which is arguably much more refined then the STR. I would have thought this would have sold closer to $150 ish. I guess the Magnus Walker tax is higher then I thought. What would you pay for a resto-mod or would you build your own?

To put it in perspective a real RS went for $473K, and thats an investment...

Somebody would have to pay me to own a modified restoration.
They're never done tastefully and they corrupt the intent of the original car.

I agree with that to an extent. In a resto-mod you are putting a little of yourself in the car, and that what makes it so special.

There is something to be said of a shop that does something really well and it shows. And you may not be able to do that yourself so you pay out the ass for it. Or you could build your own car and have more of a connection to it. You don't need the most stocked garage in the world but you do need one.
I don't know that amount of money is not real to me so I could careless. Even If I had the money I'd build my own or pay someone to help me complete my dream.

When I want to put a little of myself into a car, I drive it.

Exactly.

Yes but Magnus is not a shop, he is more or less an enthusiast. Building cars for himself. Anyone could build a car like this assuming they have a reasonable level of disposable income, and time.

Not sure I got my point across but I agree with you. I may be too tired to pontificate.
Like racing your shed built track car against a lambo and winning.

Haha we could both be talking in circles. I guess what i was trying to say is a enthusiast built car worth $302k?

If you are popular on the internet then sure. It is the exception to the rule of not buying peoples project cars haha. The price is ridiculous but good for him.
We are kind of like my parents arguing. They are often saying the same thing in different ways. So I step in and say HEY!...you are saying the same thing but some how disagreeing with each other. Quit ittt. Haha.

I'd build my own if I had FU money but I really only want to own cars I can drive on a regular and a 300k classic car is more of an investment that is really easy to damage.
I could get someone like Gas Monkey or someone like them to build me something really cool for far less and I would feel far more comfortable driving and hooning it when I wanted to.
